I am annoyed. I am terribly annoyed. I browsed the internet this morning (from my desktop in the faculty, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur). And really surprised to see that one of my favorite website, flickr.com was blocked using Webshit. What is it in flickr that should not be seen by students (this is university level for that matter!) ? Everything is perfectly legal and safe there. For an architectural student, flickr is one must visit site, it is almost part of my daily routine! It is a mecca of highquality building photos that are worth to be looked at and indeed helps a lot in broadening our architectural mind. I was pissed off and still is.
I have sent an email, by the words in it, I am sure that the reader who read the email tomorrow morning (or the next week perhaps? - UM office staff are well-known among students to be a perfect example of the worst parts of Malaysian government offices) will have their face red and fuming with madness.
I dont care if they think that the time-wasting community based sites (facebook, friendster, myspace whatsoever) should be blocked, but why on earth perfectly safe sites and VERY USEFUL ones are blocked? Please, when you enable Websense, dont just sit there doing nut-thing! Browse through the tonnes of options, and use the god-given brain to analyze and make an appropriate decision. Porn, yes block them ( I have plenty anyway). Gambling? Yes. Social networks? I dont mind. What about Education related sites? Another shock was when I found out that my former school site, mckk.edu.my was also blocked! I cant stand this bambardment of plain foolhardiness! This is ridiculous!
Guess what, after blocking the sites, our Pusat Teknologi Maklumat (Information Technology Center) still cant get enough of it. They then filter out our own www.um.edu.my ! People, that is our main university website! How dim-wit is that? Yes, for this education sites, you will have an option to browse within 10 minutes time frame for every session (with 5 sessions a day). Still, what the heck with 10 minutes? Most of us realize that besides the main www.um.edu.my site, the subdomains were a mess! Given that our main site is also filtered, I will not be surprised to see some day even Google almighty gonna get blocked too (i assume for having too much information). What else? I hope that they can lift the ban. These sites are useful, perhaps they are the culprit of having time spent too much, but it is worth it! A time-waster they are not. You cant imagine how helpful the images in Flickr helps me in opening up my creative side, finishing my assignments and decorating my fancy stick-it, pin-it-up, architectural wall. Please, this is a laughing stock. Do something. Current administration of Websenses' filtering power is nonsense and worth to be laugh at. I dont want the whole ban lifted, I only want unhindered access to information and helpful sites. {adv1} Now. anyone heard of Tunneling? How to achieve that? Sorry, I am an architectural student, not too IT literate. =) *what I cant do now. a) Join Malaysian Joomla Forum (sorry guys...) b) Use Rapidshare (tagged as Personal file Sharing) c) Read friends blog (those on blogspot). d) No more YM, MSN, gTalk (skype ok~!) *think again. I guess in the next few days, the PTM people will get mad and will block this blog. Hahaha.. See ya in few days~! *another update: Ikram-Zidane got blocked for "Message board and Forums", NoktahHitam got blocked for "Webhosting", Flisterz got blocked for "Social Networking and Personal Sites". WTF? *another update: This blog IS OFFICIALLY BLOCKED! Hurray! *update: Even gMail is filtered!. (being tagged as general email).
